Economist Bruce Johnson to Address Economic Impacts of Ethanol Production

Dr. Bruce Johnson, Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln, will discuss a recently released economic analysis entitled The 2010 Economic Impact of the Nebraska Agricultural Production Complex at a Nebraska Ethanol Board meeting on October 30. The report focuses on the state’s industries involved in growing, processing and transporting agricultural products. It concludes the agricultural complex accounts for about one quarter of Nebraska’s total economy. Dr. Johnson will specifically address the role of the state’s ethanol industry and prospects for the growth of agriculture in the state. Representatives of the Nebraska ethanol industry will attend the presentation.

Nebraska Ethanol Producers Adapt to Drought and Record Corn Prices

As drought conditions continue to impact 2012 crop forecasts and corn prices reach record levels, Nebraska ethanol producers are responding to a changing market. Like other end users of corn, ethanol producers have significantly reduced consumption in recent weeks. Latest estimates show the state's ethanol plants operating at approximately 70% of capacity, well below near 100% levels in 2011. Nebraska ethanol plants produced more than two billion gallons of ethanol from corn last year.

Dr. Kenneth Cassman, the Director of the Nebraska Center for Energy Science Research at the University of Nebraska, and the Heuermann Professor of Agronomy, will be the featured speaker at the Nebraska Ethanol Board meeting on Thursday, April 19 in Lincoln. The topic of his presentation is Ensuring the Long-Term Viability of the Nebraska Ethanol Industry.

Nebraska Sales of Ethanol Fuel Blends Top Ten Billion Gallons

Late in 2011, a Nebraska motorist stopped at a service station to fill up with ethanol blended fuel. One of the gallons going into that tank was the ten billionth sold in the state. The milestone was reached after thirty-four years and two hundred billion miles traveled on the state’s roads. Sale of the second ten billion gallons of home grown fuel is likely to occur more quickly. In 1979, 60,000 gallons were sold. In 2012, projections show Nebraska drivers will purchase nearly seven hundred million gallons.
